Day 43 brought wind advisories, whitecaps, and our first day forced completely off the Mississippi River.
The morning began in Lansing, Iowa, where donuts and coffee delayed our start but spirits were high. We paddled under the historic Blackhawk Bridge, one of its last days before demolition, and aimed for Lock 9.
But Lake Winneshiek exploded with whitecaps. There were two-foot swells tossing our boats like bathtub toys. Even barges and fishing boats pulled off the water. The Coast Guard warned small craft to stay out. The choice was clear: forcing miles would mean risking the kids, gear, and boats.
So we pulled out, regrouped with the Army Corps of Engineers at Lock 9, and camped at a park in Prairie du Chien instead. Not the miles we hoped for, but safety comes first.
We’re a family of one single mother, Smoky, and seven outdoor boys and girls paddling 2,350 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf. Some days it’s about progress, some days it’s about making the hard call.
