Music industry intelligence presented by Wired

Music discovery is still at the centre of music platform development and there are diverse approaches to bridge the distance between music and its fans. In this session we will discover these different approaches, that are a mix of artificial intelligence, human intelligence and collective intelligence.

For this, we count on Bandcamp. Even though this platform uses algorithms, the way it brings music to the audience is purely human and curatorial. On the one hand there are recommendations based on fans’ purchases (it’s more than a social media “like”), and on the other hand, they have an editorial team that digs personally into their immense catalogue.

Pandora pioneered music recommendation, merging human sensitivity with algorithmic precision. It started out in 2000 with The Music Genome Project, where a team of musicologists started labelling each song with a number of attributes (up to 450). Sophisticated algorithms arrange all these attributes to deliver listener totally personalised music.

One of the leading companies in AI and music is Jukedeck. Their tools allow to generate royalty-free music to be used in audio visual content or deliver completely personalized playlists.
