Sierra Ferrell's wonderful performance at the John Hartford tribute Rachel Baiman put together for the Green River Festival 2021. "Gumtree Canoe," with words by S. S. Steele and music by A. F. Winnemore, was first published in 1847 and was often performed—with faux "Negro" dialect—in Minstrel shows. John Hartford's recording is legendary, but Sierra makes the song her own, as she does with all the great songs she covers. I especially love the way she floats her (very) high notes every time she sings the words "float like a feather."
