As its name suggests, Osaka station is one of the main railway stations in Osaka, with connections for example to Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, and Wakayama. It is served exclusively by JR trains; however, it is not served by Shinkansen trains. Instead, these only stop at Shin-Osaka station, which is one station to the north on the JR line. Meanwhile, for further connections at Osaka station, Osaka Umeda station is located directly adjacent and is served by Hankyu and Hanshin trains, albeit in separate sections. Access to three lines of the Osaka Metro is also within walking distance.
While most if not all other elevators at Osaka railway station are either hydraulic or traction, this one is not. It uses the same unusual drive system as the elevators to the platforms at Sonobe railway station, which are screw drive models with rotating screws: • Unknown screw drive glass elevator at Sono... . Also, this elevator likely has one of the shortest travel distances at Osaka station, since it connects the platform level to an intermediate level rather than going directly down to street level where ticket gates are located. Therefore, exiting the station requires taking another elevator, which incidentally also serves the adjacent platform. On the intermediate level, this elevator forms part of a barrier for crowd control, as the space behind the lower entrance is dedicated to people exiting the platform. Said platform is served by Osaka Loop Line trains, and is therefore one of the busier platforms at the station.
Another elevator at Osaka station, which is a more conventional hydraulic model, can be seen here: • Unknown hydraulic glass elevator at Osaka ... .
