One of the most important principles of agroforestry systems is to keep maximise the photosynthesis rate of the whole system. There's only so much sunlight that reachers a determined area, and we must do our best to capture all of it. We do that by maintaining our trees in a vigorous state.
Old, decaying trees not only do less photosynthesis, but they impede the vigorous growth of nearby plants. So pruning (or felling them when necessary) is an essential action in order to maintain our photosynthesis rate high. Check it!
