Quantum Data presents: Best Selling Albums Of All Time (1968-2019)
Ever wondered what the best selling-albums of all time are? How about what your favourite artist sales are like? Well, in this list, you’ll find out just how many the 20 best-selling albums have sold, and how they compare to other artists albums. Micheal Jackson and The Eagles have been fighting for the top spot over the past few years.
Much commotion was made by The Eagles’ greatest hits compilation overtaking Michael Jackson’s Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. But that was just in the United States, where the Eagles became the first band with a 38x Platinum Album. Worldwide, Thriller is still the best-selling album of all time with a whopping 47 million certified copies sold, six million ahead of Their Greatest Hits. We’ve compiled the top 20 best-selling albums from 1968 to 2019, but it’s worth noting that there are many ways to count album sales.
Remember going to a store and browsing through records, CDs and tapes to find your new favorite album? That feels like such a dated way to consume music but, for decades, it was the only way to do it.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been the authority on U.S. music sales since the 1950s, tracking every new format that comes out and awarding artists its famous certifications of diamond, platinum and gold based on the number of units it sells or streaming listens it earns. We’ve collected the best-selling albums in American history, according to the RIAA — and, sadly, there isn’t a single record since the year 2000 to crack the list, showing the huge dip music sales have taken in the past couple decades.
The RIAA counts sales of double albums like Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II or Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti as two copies, essentially double-counting every sale. For our purposes we’ve ignored that. We’ve also ignored “claimed sales” from record labels and relied on data coming directly from the Recording Industry Association of America in the U.S. and its counterparts around the world. That means, these figures include the equivalent in online sales since RIAA started incorporating those numbers in 2016. This is as accurate as we could count as of Dec. 10, 2019, just after the latest RIAA reporting period.
How many of these classic albums do you have sitting in your old box of CDs?
