Kličevac village is located on the edge of a giant open cast lignite mine and beside one of Europe's most polluting coal-fired power stations. Both are being expanded with the help of massive Chinese investments and without environmental impact assessments (EIAs).
More than 200 families live here, just 80 km east of Belgrade on the banks of the Danube.
The mine has undermined the geology of the region, causing houses to crack and slide. The pumping of ground water under the mine has caused flooding, droughts and damaged crops, drinking water supplies and people’s health. No compensation or resettlement has been offered to people whose livelihoods have been lost and whose houses are subsiding . Many complain of respiratory problems from coal dust and fumes from the mine and the plant.
The Serbian environmental group CEKOR has worked with the affected communities for the last seven years in Kličevac and the nearby village of Drmno, which is completely encircled by the mine and powerplant.
On a recent visit with CEKOR, local residents told FIAN International that they want to be resettled and compensated. They also want the European Union to hold Serbia to account for it's lack of respect for human and environmental rights.
