A giant open cast lignite mine in Drmno, 80 km east of the Serbian capital Belgrade has undermined the geology of the region, causing houses to crack and slide. Ground water pumped from under the mine has caused flooding and droughts, affecting crops, drinking water and local people‘s houses.
No compensation or resettlement has been offered to people whose livelihoods have been destroyed and whose houses are cracking and subsiding. Many complain of respiratory problems from coal dust and fumes from the mine and the adjacent lignite fired power station, one of Europe’s most polluting.
The mine and the power plant have been expanded, thanks to Chinese investments and without environmental impact assessments (EIAs). They completely encircle the village of Drmno. The air is thick with dust and the smell of sulphur.
The Serbian environmental group CEKOR is working with affected communities living around the mine and power plant in Drmno and nearby Kličevac.
On a recent visit with CEKOR, local residents told FIAN International that they want to be resettled and compensated as soon as possible. They also want the European Union to hold Serbia to account for it's lack of respect for human and environmental rights.
