I inherited this Benrus Citation Copley wristwatch from my grandfather. It was made in 1955, and uses an ETA 1220 movement. It needed serviced, as it was losing about 10 minutes a day. This is the sixth of a series of videos showing the entire overhaul process. I will tear it down to a pile of parts, clean them, lubricate it where needed and reassemble it, then adjust it for accuracy.
This video shows how to remove the train bridge, the train wheels, and the mainspring barrel.
This is a learning experience for me. I have done some minor watch repairs, but this is the first full service I have done. I will undoubtedly make some mistakes and experienced watchmakers will probably find things I should have done differently. I'm filming the work to help me see how to reassemble it, and because some friends wanted to watch the process.
For those interested in learning watch repair, I highly recommend Alex Hamilton's Watch Repair Tutorials channel. He's a retired watchmakers whose videos are very detailed and clearly explained. I learned a lot from him, and have a lot more to learn. @watchrepairtutorials
Another invaluable source has been a very old book called The Watch Repairer's Manual by Henry Fried. Fried was a famous watchmaker and teacher in the mid-Twentieth century. This book was published in 1949, and revised in 1961. Fried uses a watch movement very similar to the ETA 1220 movement in my watch as the example for his step-by-step chapter on how to do a standard service on a "modern" (for the time) watch movement. There is not much info online about servicing these old movements and while watch design has changed little in the last 100 years, there are a few differences that this book explained. The Second Edition is still in print and can be purchased on Amazon:
