Yellow Ironweed!

This is my first post-retirement fire video! I hope you enjoyed it. Settling into retirement has actually been quite busy. Plus, it’s been an awfully cold and wet winter. I’m glad it’s finally warming up a bit so I can go play outside.
One thing I forgot to mention is the video is how hard Yellow Ironweed is. It’s probably the hardest wildflower I’ve worked with. It’s so hard that it just drills through soft fireboards (Cedar, White Pine, etc.) unless you’re really careful about backing off on pressure. It likes harder fireboards, like White Ash, just fine. Also, unlike true Ironweeds, Yellow Ironweed has a thick woody exterior, much like Goldenrod. True Ironweeds can be used to make super fast embers, but their stalks are fragile by comparison.
If you are interested, here’s the link to the Missouri Department of Conservation website that I mentioned.
