Remains of the Abandoned Village of Scar

Welcome to the 5th and final part of this series from Nidderdale, looking at the railways, quarries and inclines responsible for the construction of the two reservoirs and dams at the top of the system - Scar House and Angram.

We start this video looking at some of the remains of the village that was constructed to house the workers and families. Plenty of evidence can be found of the community, with information points around the site. We the foundations of the old chapel, comunity centre and cinema - amazingly the projection booth from the cinema is still standing. The majority of buildings in the temporary village were of wooden construction, but the booth was concrete, which probably explains why it remains standing today.

With the help of the map (and horrific phone signal) we attempt to locate the remains in the long grass and rugged landscape.

Just behind the quarry can be found another fantastic incline and quarry - like we've already covered in previous episodes. This old 3ft railway incline can be clearly seen on the south of the dam. We understand this dates slightly older than the Carle Fell equivalent on the other side of the valley. Probably for the construction of the Angram reservoir. Wheels for the rope working can be seen discarded under a very poorly looking stone tower.

Back down to the bottom again, we continue attempting to piece together the remains of the old Scar village - including the rows and hostels. Over 1000 people lived in the village at it's peak, with the remaining workers travelling up to the reservoir construction site via the Nidd Valley Light Railway. Scar village was built between 1920 and 1921, consisting of ten hostels, a school, canteen, recreation room, concert hall, mission church and some bungalows.

The village was abandoned in 1936 when the construction work for the Scar House dam completed. The buildings were sold off, with many relocating to other areas.
