Building Scar House Dam, The Abandoned Quarry & Incline

Welcome to part 4 of this series on the lost railways and tramways of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire.
We've already followed the Nidd Valley Light Railway from Pateley Bride to the site of the Scar House and Angram reservoirs in parts 1 and 2. We're now going to look at the building of the imposing Scar House dam.

Stone for the dam was extracted from the Carle Fell quarry which overlooks the reservoir. Stone was lowered down the incline to the building site below. We walk up the remains of the inline and see the foundations of the winding drum and engine house deep in the quarry.

Scar House Reservoir is a large body of water located in the Yorkshire Dales in northern England, specifically in the Upper Nidderdale area, which is part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The reservoir is situated near the small village of Lofthouse, in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire. The reservoir was built between 1927 and 1936 by the Bradford Corporation to provide water to the city. It holds around 4,200 million gallons (approximately 19 million cubic meters) of water.

The Scar House Dam, which is an important structural feature of the reservoir, is an embankment dam built from earth and rock. It has a height of around 27 meters (89 feet) and spans 360 meters (1,180 feet). The area around Scar House Reservoir is known for its stunning natural beauty. It is nestled in a picturesque valley, surrounded by hills and moorlands typical of the Yorkshire Dales landscape.
