“The Joint Is Jumpin’” is a 1937 composition by pianist Thomas “Fats” Waller, also the composer of several lasting popular songs, like “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Keepin’ out of Mischief Now,” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” This tune, with lyrics by Andy Razaf, is a tribute to the times of the “rent party” in Harlem, when people would hire a pianist (typically a stride pianist), invite their friends over for an admission fee (“Be sure to pay your quarter!”), and try to raise enough money to pay their rent while making the best of a stressful economic situation. The pianist provided the entertainment, and people would dance all night into the early hours of the morning. Among the many aural and visual documents we are fortunate to have of Waller, there is a soundie of him playing this tune with his band.
Recorded on May 3, 2025 at the Zingghaus in Köniz, Switzerland.
