Israel’s reported recognition and engagement with Somaliland marks a significant shift towards unconventional alliances beyond traditional West Asian partnerships. Though Somaliland is not internationally recognised as a sovereign state, its strategic location near the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has made it geopolitically valuable.

For Israel, Somaliland offers proximity to key maritime choke points and conflict zones—especially Yemen, where the Houthis have disrupted shipping and threatened regional security. These intersecting interests help explain Israel’s outreach despite diplomatic sensitivities.
