What Went Wrong with India’s Chabahar Port Project in Iran: Strategic Dream, Geopolitical Reality

India’s long-cherished strategic project in Iran—the Chabahar Port—now appears to be on the verge of collapse. In a significant development, India reportedly transferred about $120 million to Iran to fully liquidate its financial commitment for developing the port, completing the payout just before the United States reinstated sanctions on Chabahar in September.

The move effectively ends India’s active financial engagement with a project once seen as a strategic counter to Pakistan’s Gwadar port and a vital gateway to Central Asia and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
