X-Teach: Excellent Teaching in Large Classes - 2024 MIAMI Women Grant Recipient

Learning in large classes at Miami University happens when the instructor is well-versed in student-centered and interactive approaches to teaching. Unfortunately, these approaches are not part of the typical education and training of faculty. To build teaching skills that support students in large class environments, faculty need intensive and immersive development. Excellent Teaching in Large Classes or X-Teach provides such development through a tried-and-true development approach at Miami, a Faculty Learning Community (FLC). X-Teach has a novel twist and includes implementation and further support to help meet its student-centered aim: to increase student engagement and learning outcomes in large courses.

This project fills a special need in programming to strongly align courses with the student-centered undergraduate teaching mission. Miami faculty care deeply about student learning; however, disciplinary expertise is not sufficient for planning and executing instruction aligned with theory, research, and best practices on how students learn. This FLC will leverage the commitment of faculty as well as the FLC model to transform large Miami courses into environments where students, rather than faculty, are at the center of the activity.
