Join us as we experience the fun and chaos of Berikaoba, Georgia's ancient festival that welcomes in the spring with mud, masks and whips 🇬🇪

In this episode of our van travel series we head to Didi Chailuri in the Kakheti region of Northern Georgian, where the unique cultural tradition that is Berikaoba festival takes place once a year. This pagan fertility festival celebrates the arrival of spring with the berikas, costumed local men and folk theatre performers, setting out to cause mischief in the village. They run around cracking whips, smearing mud and taking gifts from the villagers in return for the promise of a prosperous year. We get involved in this unique cultural practice and get covered head to toe in mud!
The festival also features Chidaoba, an ancient form of wrestling that is unique to Georgia, inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and a village-wide supra feast.
