"Water Swallows You" exists in a world almost completely free from stress. Using cycles of perfect fifths, the musical ideas combine to create contrasting chords, tonalities, and emotions throughout. Emerging from a nearly imperceptible beginning, themes are soon established and build to an intense storm of a climax, occurring approximately halfway through the piece. As this tension begins to resolve, each established theme slowly floats away and disappears, leaving a rising progression of fifths, suspended in the water before sinking further and further into the deep sea. Through leaping melodies and delicate string harmonics appearing and vanishing back into the water, the peaceful ending repeatedly whispers “calm down, breathe”.
Performed on November 12, 2024 by Georgia Burtt, Erika Liu, Nicolas Bussalleu, and Natalie Van Winkle at my senior composition recital at the Frost School of Music Newman Recital Hall.
