Tales of Phantasia #07 - Return to Forest of Spirits & Venezia City - (No Commentary)

The great tree Yggdrasil is the same tree that once spoke to Cless and asked him not to harm it. In this time, a hundred years in the past, the sacred tree is dying as its mana is being drained away. When Cless and his friends approach, the spirit of the tree appears and explains that Yggdrasil is the source of all mana, the very life force that gives power to spirits and magic. Klarth is stunned to learn that all the world’s mana flows from this single tree. Something unseen is consuming that energy, leaving the world weaker with every passing moment. With no way to save the tree yet, the group decides to head toward Alvanista to seek more knowledge and to make a contract with Luna, the spirit of the moon, known as the most powerful of all Spirits.
To reach Alvanista, Cless and his companions travel north to the port city of Venezia. Along the way, they stop by the town of Hamel, only to find it in ruins. The once peaceful place is now destroyed, and among the wreckage, they find a single survivor, a young girl named Leah. Through tears, she tells them that a magician named Demeter destroyed the town and killed her parents, including her mother Scarlett, who had been thought to have died in an accident. Moved by her loss, Cless vows to avenge Leah’s family and take her under his protection.
Following Demeter’s trail, the group continues north and reaches Venezia, a busy port city now filled with tension as Dhaos’s shadow looms over the land. Inside the mayor’s mansion, a large party is being held, and by listening to the guests, Cless learns that Demeter is hiding on a small island far to the west. The mayor of Venezia is also the brother of the mayor of Belladam, so it’s worth talking to him. At the harbor, two ships wait at the docks. Speaking to the captain of the ship on the left, Cless arranges a trip to the island where Demeter resides. The journey costs 800 Gald, so it is wise to save enough money before setting sail.

Tales of Phantasia (テイルズ オブ ファンタジア) is a real-time action RPG developed by Wolf Team and published by Namco for the Super Famicom. It is the first game in the long-running Tales series originally released only in Japan in December 1995. For its time, it was a very advanced game thanks to Hiroya Hatsushiba’s “Flexible Voice Driver,” which allowed impressive voice acting and a fully voiced opening song, Yume wa Owaranai by Yoshida Yukari. The character designs by Kōsuke Fujishima gave it a distinct anime look, and it introduced the Linear Motion Battle System used throughout the series.
The PlayStation version (1998) improves the game with better graphics, smoother gameplay, redrawn characters and backgrounds, and a 3D world map. It also adds voiced skits, cooking, and titles these features that later became key elements in future Tales games.
