China’s reusable rocket ambitions took a dramatic step forward and backward at the same time with the recent Zhuque‑3 launch. On December 3, 2025, LandSpace successfully placed the second stage into orbit, marking a historic first for a Chinese methalox rocket attempting reusability, but the first stage failed to land safely. The booster, powered by nine Tianque‑12A engines producing roughly 730 tons of thrust, initially descended smoothly before experiencing abnormal combustion during the landing burn, erupting in flames and crashing near—but slightly off—the intended pad. Despite the fiery failure, the flight provided invaluable data on engine performance, guidance, re-entry control, and structural integrity, validating key systems for future attempts. While China still lags behind mature reusable programs like SpaceX’s Falcon 9, this “almost landing” demonstrates significant progress for the private aerospace sector, showing that orbital insertion and booster return can be attempted simultaneously, and sets the stage for iterative improvements that could eventually make China a serious competitor in reusable orbital rockets.
