Why People Think Hospice Killed Their Loved One

Hospice gets a lot of hate, and most of the time, it comes from pain, confusion, and a lack of clear information. I hear it constantly: hospice killed my mom, hospice left us alone, hospice didn’t help. If you’ve ever felt that way, this video is for you.

In this video, I explain why so many families come to those conclusions and what is usually happening behind the scenes. We live in a culture that avoids talking about death, even in healthcare. Because of that, many families enter hospice without understanding what it means when someone is dying, what changes to expect, or what hospice is actually responsible for.

I walk through common scenarios that lead families to feel betrayed by hospice, including changes in eating and sleeping, the use of medications like morphine, and why hospice staff may not be present as often as people expect. I also explain where hospice sometimes does fall short, especially when families are not properly educated or supported.

We’ll talk about the role of the family in hospice care, why hospice focuses on comfort rather than prolonging life, and how medication at the end of life works. I also share what families can do if they feel uncomfortable, unheard, or unsure, including how to ask questions, call for help, or even switch hospice providers if needed.
