'The Voice O The Guns' is a march written in 1917 by the man known as Britain's March King, Kenneth J. Alford (1881-1945).
Alford was born Frederick Joseph Ricketts in the Thames-side suburb of Ratcliff on 21st February, 1881.
Using the pen name Alford (his mother's maiden name) he composed marches for band which are considered great examples of the art.
Many of his marches have a story behind their title.
In this case, 'The Voice Of The Guns' was meant initially to honour British artillerymen in World War I, hence the name.
Later it became widely adopted by the British army as a whole.
The march, usually arranged for full marching band, was featured prominently in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia
This recording is by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy conducted by Major J.P. Laro from a 1975 Philips 12 inch vinyl LP titled 'On The Quarterdeck”. (6401 906).
