'Holyrood' is a march written in 1912 by the man known as Britain's March King, Kenneth J. Alford (1881-1945).
Alford was born Frederick Joseph Ricketts in the Thames-side suburb of Ratcliff on 21st February, 1881.
Using the pen name Alford (his mother's maiden name) he composed marches for band which are considered great examples of the art.
Many of his marches have a story behind their title.
In this case, ' Holyrood' is named after the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
It commemorates the coronation year visit of King George V and Queen Mary.
This march is now the quick march of the RAF Regiment.
This recording is by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy conducted by Major J.P. Laro from a 1975 Philips 12 inch vinyl LP titled 'On The Quarterdeck”. (6401 906).
