World Food Safety Day, from the World Health Organization, is a time to put food safety in the spotlight. In 2023, the theme is, 'food standards save lives', and they most certainly do.
To start with though, let's refocus on what food safety is. It's the safety of food along the entire agricultural and food supply chain, saving lives, preventing illness and reducing the economic burden of food borne disease on society.
...but just how significant a problem are we talking about? Well, the food safety burden in Australia is huge, with an estimated 4.7 million cases annually. Listeria monocytogenes has the highest mortality rate, and although there's only around 100 cases annually, there is substantial premature mortality. This means the annual cost to the Australian economy of premature death due to Listeria monocytogenes is a staggering $75 million.
With an impact and burden like this, prevention is better than cure, and that’s where food safety standards come in. Food safety regulations are present to reduce the impact of illness, the economic burden and the devastation of premature death.
