At 2:54 am on 12 October 1984, a 105lb gelignite bomb detonated in room 629 of the Grand Brighton Hotel. The intended target of the blast was British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet colleagues, all of whom were staying at the Grand for the duration of that year's Conservative Party Conference. The bomb had been planted some four weeks before the explosion by Patrick Magee, a bomb maker in the Provisional IRA. The blast was one of the most significant operations carried out by the Provisional IRA during the Troubles, and represented the culmination of years of planning by the militant organisation in its effort to assassinate Prime Minister Thatcher. While Thatcher narrowly escaped injury, the explosion and resultant roof collapse killed five people and injured more than 30 others. Presented here is raw footage captured in the minutes, hours, and days that followed the bombing of the Grand Brighton Hotel.
