The US blundered in failing to develop along range fighter escort in WWII. This failure resulted in the loss of hundreds of bombers engaged in air-to-air combat with German enemy aircraft. Once P-51, P-47, and P-38 long range fighter aircraft became available, loss rates plummeted to around ¼ the loss rate of un-escorted bombers. German officers credited the long range fighter escort as the turning point in the bomber war.
