There are three different versions of this song circulating around the internet. Jimmy Powell and his band, The 5 Dimensions, first recorded a cover version of Buster Brown’s “Sugar Baby (Parts I & II)” in 1962. “Part I” is 2:46 long. “Part II” is 2:19 long. Who does the lead on which of these versions is an interesting discussion. It could’ve been one of the 5 Dimensions’ two guitarists – Gary Laport or Peter Mariosa. Or it could be Big Jim Sullivan, an often-used session guitarist back in those days.
In 1964 Jimmy Powell split with the 5 Dimensions and on November 20th went back into the studio to record another rendition of “Sugar Baby” with Jimmy Page on guitar and John Paul Jones on bass. This version is 2:45 long and was released by Pye Records.
Jimmy Page does a 20 second solo which starts around 0:59 into the song.
