A quick visit to the old Athlone - Mullingar Railway Line on Tuesday the 1st of July 2014.
Midland Great Western Railway from Athlone to Mullingar formed part of the main route between Dublin, County Galway and County Mayo until 1987, when Córas Iompair Éireann (CIE) closed the line and severing the rail link between Athlone and Mullingar. The line was a total of 27 miles long. A number of Action Groups are nowcalling for the reopening of the rail link as vital to the expansion of the economy of the “Midland Gateway”.
On 2nd October 1848 the first train arrived in Mullingar. The Mullingar and Athlone Railway Stations were designed by the architect J. S. Mulvany. If not reopened as a functioning railway line, this section of disused railway may have the potential to be developed as a walking/cycle route.
The railway line served three main stations, they were Mullingar, Moate and Athlone.
Though it would be very unlikely that the line would open anytime soon as the junction to the line at Athlone is currently blocked off. The only part of the line that is sometimes used is the junction in Mullingar, steam loco's need to use the turntable in Mullingar which is located on a short section of the old line.
