A distillation column is a separation unit used in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, and refinery industries to separate a liquid mixture into two or more components based on differences in boiling points or relative volatility.
The separation occurs through repeated vaporization and condensation inside the column. The lighter components (low boiling point) rise upward as vapor, while the heavier components (high boiling point) flow downward as liquid. This continuous mass and heat transfer leads to efficient separation.
