Rather than engaging with the bourgeois decadence of Paris, Rembrandt Bugatti instead sought out another sort of company. He consulted the zebras, storks, elephants and other exotic animals in the magnificent gardens of the Jardin des Plantes. In time, Bugatti would become one of the greatest animal sculptors in art history, and his piece Deux girafes reflects the artist at the height of his powers. Using Italian clay, Bugatti was able to capture the towering mammals musculature and movement in his characteristic Impressionistic style. In 1908, this unique bronze was purchase by political leader Joseph Reinach, renown for his defense of Alfred Dreyfus of the Dreyfus affair. Deux girafes has remained in the Reinach family collection since, and will be offered as a highlight of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale. (12 November | New York)
