In this video I'm breaking down the absolutely killer solo to "Over My Head" by King's X from the Gretchen Goes To Nebraska record.
Guitarist Ty Tabor has such a beautifully melodic and edgy lead style. He's very unique and incorporates amazing blues based licks with great phrasing ideas. In this solo there's some fantastic string bending, vibrato and blues scale mojo happening. Ty also mixes in the Dorian mode and even some tapping at the end! I love this solo!
This is in the key of E and kind of goes between an Aeolian and Dorian sound, but most of the note choices are straight out of the E blues scale. This is a perfect solo that demonstrates it's not what you play but HOW you play it.
In the live versions I've seen Ty doesn't use a whammy bar for that last lick and instead uses descending cromatic movement to get a similar sound.
Although a ton of King's X tunes use drop D tuning this one is in standard tuning.
