Using Dural Mobilization for Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal, which normally provides ample space for the spinal cord and nerve roots, becomes narrower. This narrowing can be caused by various factors, such as aging, herniated discs, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments. As the space within the spinal canal diminishes, it can exert pressure on the nerves, resulting in a range of symptoms.
One common symptom experienced by individuals with spinal stenosis is numbness. Numbness typically occurs in the extremities, such as the legs or arms, depending on the location of the affected spinal region. The pressure on the nerves can interfere with their normal function, leading to a diminished sensation in the affected areas. It's important to note that numbness may also be accompanied by tingling, weakness, or pain.
This video illustrates a manual therapy technique that massage therapists can use to reduce numbness by mobilizing the dural membrane. This massage technique is part of a larger approach called Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, a therapy approach developed by Erik Dalton PhD to effectively treat complicated and chronic pain conditions.
