The Getty Center. Hockney’s 1986 masterpiece ‘Pear Blossom Highway’ is being brought up from cold storage, along with its smaller preparatory version. For conservation reasons they are never normally shown together. This large photo-collage represented a breakthrough moment for DH and he frequently refers to it. It re-invents Photography and Drawing as Cubist collage, bringing the two media together to question the rules of perspective which have governed Western Art since the Renaissance. David believes this scene of a desert crossroads, carefully stitched together from 750 photographic prints, more nearly captures human perception, that co-ordination of brain, eye and feeling.
He is in conversation with The Getty Museum’s longtime photography curator, Weston Naef. Now retired, Weston had come from the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1984 and ended up quadrupling the photo collection, adding 75,000 images.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood – outside, in all weathers, through the seasons – culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
