The fertile window is critical for conception, as an egg remains viable for only about 24 hours after ovulation. Understanding the menstrual cycle helps pinpoint this optimal time. The cycle begins with menstrual bleeding, during which several ovarian follicles grow. By the end of the first week, all but one follicle disintegrate. The dominant follicle continues to grow, nourishing the developing egg.

A few days before mid-cycle, the follicle releases estrogen, signaling the brain's pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH). The LH surge triggers ovulation within 24-48 hours. The follicle swells and bursts, releasing the egg, which is swept into the fallopian tube by fimbriae. The egg travels toward the uterus and is viable for fertilization for 12-24 hours.

If fertilization occurs, the resulting zygote develops into a blastocyst, which implants in the uterine lining to begin pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized, it dissolves and is shed along with the uterine lining during menstruation.
