The Csömödér narrow gauge railway is Hungary's longest narrow gauge system, primarily serving forestry and freight, with a popular 32 km tourist route between Lenti and Kistolmács that runs through the picturesque Göcsej region. It offers scenic rides through forests, passing landmarks like the Budafa Arboretum, with the option to transport bicycles and ride a steam-powered "nostalgia" train. The system is managed by ZALAERDŐ Zrt., a forestry company, and the Lenti station features the Göcsej Museum, which details the area's history, forestry, and the railway's origins.
The entire system spans over 100 km, but the main tourist line is a 32 km route from Lenti to Kistolmács. While primarily a forestry line for timber, it also offers public passenger services.
The line winds through the beautiful Göcsej forest region, passing through areas with pine, beech, and ancient beech woods, and near attractions such as the Budafa Arboretum.
Passengers can take a heritage train, the steam locomotive "Abel" from Transylvania, on special occasions, and the line is well-integrated with hiking and cycling routes. Bicycle transport is available upon request.
The main station in Lenti is a hub for the railway and a home to the Göcsej Museum, providing information on local forests, forestry, hunting, and the railway's history.
Passenger services operate from late April to late September on a scheduled timetable. Special trains are also organized for festivals.
