The Death of Edward I 1307AD
Sick, in ill health and fighting the effects of old age, King Edward Plantagenet I of England attempted to advance into Scotland once again to put down the Robert the Bruce insurrection.
At the head of his army he left Carlisle mounted on his Great War horse for the very last time. He would only cover 6 miles in 10 days before stopping on the Solway Coast near Burgh by Sands.
Edward, a character of grim and powerful determination and irritable to complete the mission to subjugate Scotland, fought to his final breath to see that through…
There his army waited and attended to him, but as they attempted to move him King Edward died in the arms of his attendants.
He was taken to the nearby medieval St Michael’s Church where the great King lay in state for 10 days before his final journey south to Westminster Abbey.
He was 68 years of age.
Prince Edward was shortly thereafter declared King and crowned King Edward II.
England had lost its most powerful warrior King ever, and Scotland under Robert the Bruce gained respite through the death of their greatest enemy.
