Although they may look really similar, dry needling and acupuncture are very different techniques. Dry needling is another form of soft tissue mobilization that has been shown to effectively treat chronic pain.
In a chronic pain state, our brains and bodies do not communicate well with each other. When a needle is inserted into the body, the brain can no longer ignore it and begins to move the body out of a generalized pain response into a more positive attentive state. While the brain does this, we use manual therapy to help guide the body through releases of joints, muscles, nerves, and ligaments. This improves movement, coordination, and balance as well as decreases pain and calms the nervous system.
