Full title and abstract:
Short-Form Naming Tests for Assessing Relative Linguistic Impairment in Chronic or Progressive Aphasias
Cognitively targeted short-form naming tests can place more relative load onto lexical retrieval processes versus sublexical production processes (phonological sequencing, motor planning, articulation) depending on the properties of the target items. We explored the effects of different short-form tests on response types among 20 healthy controls, 91 people with chronic left hemisphere stroke, and 63 people with diagnosed degenerative neurological conditions, 24 of which had primary progressive aphasia. Performance modulations, while infrequent, were reliable over time and meaningfully related to other clinical, behavioral, and neurological measures of aphasia. Administering the tests to neurodegenerative patients was feasible; susceptibility of response types to modulation varied by PPA variant. These tools and techniques can enhance the clinical evaluation of picture naming.
