Abstract:
Reading Between the Lesions: Understanding Cognitive and Language Deficits After Stroke Through Disconnections
Understanding why some stroke survivors experience more severe language and cognitive impairments than others - despite similar lesion profiles - requires us to look beyond the visible damage. The integrity of the residual brain tissue, and how well it stays connected are critical determinants of outcome. In this talk, I will discuss how structural disconnections caused by both stroke lesions and white matter hyperintensities contribute to non-verbal cognitive deficits in post-stroke aphasia, offering new insights into the mechanisms underlying post-stroke cognitive impairment.
