What is Rotomation in Visual Effects?

Hi Everyone. In this video we cover the art of rotomation in visual effects. Rotomation is essentially like rotoscoping but in 3D. It is the process of lining up 3D CG geometry to the corresponding live-action geometry so that other elements can interact with it. This invisible visual effect is incredibly useful for many CG elements that will be integrated into a scene.

You might not notice rotomation when watching the final shot, and that’s exactly the point. It allows things like digital cloth simulations, 3D shadows, reflections, particles, and even destruction effects to wrap around real-world objects in a believable way. Whether it’s matching a CG arm to a real one for muscle simulations or having debris realistically bounce off a character, rotomation bridges the gap between the digital and the real.
