As I re-orientate my human self in a country where bicycles are the everyday mode of transport, I found myself tied between two ways I can transport my doggy safely and comfortably with me on my bicycle. But I was also looking for a carrier I can use for train and bus trips.
My doggy’s airline carrier is great for the train and bus, but carrier it by hand while walking from A to Z is a bit too much, I would prefer to have my hands free.
Back to the bicycle - Here is the hard truth:
1. I am not a good rider (yet) – lessons in progress.
2. I have an old second hand “oumafiets” that has to do for now, and I don’t know how make much modifications to it. It runs fantastic though.
3. I don’t know how to safely take my doggy with me on the bicycle for quick vet visits. He has to go to the vet every 21 days.
THE FIETSMAND
Here in the Netherlands most people with small pets transport them in a “fietsmand”. It is a pet basket that goes either on the bicycle steering bar or on the back luggage rack. These pet baskets come in different shapes and sizes…… The one I am eyeing is EXPENSIVE and just not on the cards right now because I do believe that as I am not a good rider yet, if necessary, I might jump off the bicycle and can see my pet in basket and bicycle crashing into something while I remain standing…… that means I might rather need to have him on me….
THE BACKPACK STYLE PET CARRIER
And so I started looking at backpack style pet carriers. I found the average sizes just toooooooo large and was worried it might feel like I am carrying a dog house on my back while cycle a normal “ouma fiets”.
I researched, then parked the idea and let some time go by. Then revisited the topic and started researching again, more time went by. And so this carried on…… well, I finally decided to buy a backpack style pet carrier!!!!
THE REVEAL
I bought the “sightseeing” day backpack dog backpack style carrier. It is suitable for shorter trips or outings and allows you to comfortably carry your small pet on your back.
I bought the bag in 2024 from Zooplus online for 25 EUR - I would say it is suitable for small pets up to 4kg.
FEATURES
I love the net dome that is on the entire top one side of the backpack, the flat part / or at least back of the bag is nicely padded and sits snug against your back. This dome and a framework inside that works well and can also be clipped up at the top.
The floor of the carrier is sturdy and has a wool feel surface.
The back of the backpack is better padded than most I have seen and the shoulder straps are adjustable and also padded which makes it super comfortable to wear on your back. It also has a mid-section strap which allows you to secure the bag around your waist.
WHERE HAVE THE BAG BEEN THE MOST USEFUL?
• Short bicycle trips – here we are out in nature
• Short trips to the vet
• Train trips
• Bus trips
For longer travel I didn’t find that the bag the comfortable enough for my chihuahua, he is on the bigger side and weighed 4.7kg at the time we took a train trip to Stuttgart in Germany by train with this bag.
For longer travels make sure you have a bag that is long enough for your doggy to lie down and stretch out in.
Soooo, what solution did I make after discovering that the bag wasn’t big enough for long train trips….. I will tell you all about it in the next video.
Stay tuned for the next video where I will share with you my ins and outs of travelling with your small dog by train in Europe!
