S1 E 4 – Part 2: Flying with small pet in cabin with Lufthansa | SA to EU

Follow our journey as we prepare to immigrate to Europe (just a solo girl and her doggy). In this video I share the authentic steps that I followed to prepare paper work for my doggy to immigrate with me and take a flight with me, in cabin on Lufthansa Airlines.

My number one tip is - Think of your pets comfort as you prepare for the flight!
1. Make sure your pet has everything needed for the trip
Think of things like: WATER
Food
Small training treats & high-quality dental sticks for knowing on while lifting off and landing – they also need their ears to regulate air pressure just like we do
Blankets
Jersey
Comfortable harness
Lead
Training pads
Pet safe wipes
Tissues
Calm Eze (available for dogs and cats) for the stress period of packing up your home and for the flight {do not sedate your pet}

CHECKING IN
When we arrived at the line for check-in there was a lady who spotted the Dassievark – he was the only doggy on the flight and they were looking out for us – that was awesome. At the check-in desk you will check-in, then fill in some paper work to check-in your pet, then pay the pet flight fee. For us the fee was EUR 110 for CPT – Frankfurt – Amsterdam.

PASSPORT CONTROL & BOARDING GATE
There is no need to mention your pet or talk about your pet or your pet’s paper work at passport control on leaving SA. They only look at your passport.


TIPS
Make sure there is enough padding in the bottom of your pet carrier. It will help them during turbulence and hard landings.
Consider taking the calm eze https://www.calmezeplus.com/ - a natural stress supplement in liquid or tablet form. I took the liquid one for cats, it is the same ingredients as for dogs, just half dose. It came in a convenient size 50ml, so could comply with EU liquid rules. Do not sedate your pet.
Take at least 2 blankies and their favourite toy if they are very attached to toys. My doggy had no interest in a toy during the trip it just ended up in my hand luggage. Two blankies: 1 to lie on and one to put over them later during the flight if they get cold. My doggy was very warm the first few hours of the flight, but around 1am he was cold and so enjoyed a blanky over. Also for in case there is a mess, you will have a second blanky.
Arrange food, dog bed, dog blankies etc to be ready on arrival on the other side.
Make sure you book a ticket that you can make changes to!!! If anything happens and you need to perhaps delay your trip by a week or two you can.
Small quality treats for lift off and landing to distract them and help regulate ears with cabin pressure changes.
Sign up with a vet on arrival / or before hand and register your doggy within the first 3 months of arriving. Get EU passport through your vet, essential if your doggy will travel with you through the rest of Europe on future trips.
