STORYLINE:

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has arrived in Vietnam for a three-day visit aimed at expanding defence and economic ties between the two countries.

Jiang's plane touched down at Hanoi International airport on Wednesday.

The Chinese premier and his wife Wang Yiping were greeted by hundreds of school children as well as 200 young women in Vietnamese national dress.

Jiang Zemin was then greeted by Nong Duc Manh, Vietnam's Communist Party Secretary General, before attending a ceremonial military welcome parade at the presidential palace.

The visit marks a further warming of relations between the two Communist neighbours, who fought a brutal border war 23 years ago and re-established diplomatic ties only in 1991.

Over the past decade, trade has jumped to 2-point-8 billion (b) US dollars a year from just 30 million (m), and the two countries have set a target of 5 billion (b) by 2005.

Both countries - among the world's last remaining Communist nations - have abandoned many of their former centralised economic controls and are allowing increased private enterprise.

Relations, however, remain overshadowed by memories of the war and centuries of Chinese domination over Vietnam.
