Watch the hood training process that I have used for many types of birds of prey for nearly 30 years. Hood training is not as difficult as some people make it out to be. The key is learning the technique.
Part 2: Will be a video showing the actual hood training process for a newly wild caught red-tailed hawk or a Cooper's hawk. This video should come out in August or September 2022!
Also keep an eye out for videos that will be coming showing legal hawk trapping for falconry.
We don't train owls to wear a hood. The hood is used to keep the birds calm and safe during transit. The eyesight of the birds of prey is so excellent and stronger than ours, this birds can stress out and become overstimulated. The hood helps keep the birds calm, which makes it much easier and safter to transport the birds.
This is the technique that has worked for me and even the most difficult birds learn to accept the hood in time.
Other methods for training are out there, this is the method that has worked best for me.
Once a bird is trained to accept the hood, then the feeding the tidbits and prolonged training can be shortened or stopped completely. Too much feeding on the fist can create other behavior problems in our birds.
In this video I use the Lanner Falcon, Saker Falcon, and Harris Hawk as examples.
Please hit the like button, and don't forget to subscribe to see more videos that come out. I try to post to my Falcon Quest, Birds of Prey Channel once a week, usually on Thursdays.
