In this video, I break down a 4-on-4 scramble drill we use often to train real game situations.
The setup is simple, but the learning is powerful. On the catch, the on-ball defender has to high-five a coach before recovering, immediately putting the defense in a scramble. This creates natural advantages and forces players to make real reads.
What this drill emphasizes:
Catching the ball and ripping downhill with fewer dribbles
Keeping advantages on offense to generate high-percentage shots
Defensively fighting to get back to neutral as quickly as possible
Decision-making in chaotic, game-like situations
Scramble situations happen in every game, no matter how good your defense is. This drill prepares players for that reality. It will get messy. There will be turnovers. That’s where the coaching and learning happen.
If you’re a coach looking for game-like drills, small-sided games, and practice ideas that actually transfer to games, this video is for you.
