UK Atomic Energy Authority, along with EUROfusion, VTT (Finland), FZJ (Germany) and ENEA (Italy) and four other supporting laboratories, have successfully designed and deployed a Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) unit inside JET to measure retained fusion fuel within plasma-facing tiles and components. Traditionally used in static laboratory settings, this is the first time that a LIBS has been used in an irradiated and activated environment like a fusion machine's tokamak
