Applying a medical cast is hardly as simple as wrapping a whole bunch of tape over the affected area. Each medical cast consists of a few layers, and each layer fulfills an essential purpose. Laypersons without medical experience may want to think of it as they would think of cold weather clothing. Wearing a jacket without any undershirts or other layers may not be enough to keep you warm.
Tubular cast stockinette is the first layer applied during a medical cast application. This layer helps to wick sweat from the body. Cast padding is rolled over top of the cast stockinette, followed by fiberglass or plaster casting tape. It is quite useful under bracing products such as a cam walker or knee brace to keep the brace from coming in contact with sweat, keeping it clean and sanitary.
