This number from the theatrically released move, Bluegrass County Soul, is introduced in the film by Carlton Haney, the festival's producer. As he explains it, many of the younger musicians took on songs by popular rock groups and turned them into bluegrass. As Carlton said, this increased the popularity of bluegrass among younger audiences world-wide. There is no common agreement as to who first coined the term "new grass" but many people feel it's a toss up between Sam Bush & The New Grass Revival and The New Deal String Band, featured here. It should be remembered that in 1971, when this movie was filmed, that "long-haired hippies" were sometimes controversial at bluegrass festivals.
