Masaka Grade I Magistrate Abdullah Kyazze has remanded Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira to Masaka Main Prison until January 22, 2026, following his first court appearance after more than three weeks in military detention.
The 46-year-old priest, curate at Bumangi Parish in Kalangala District and head of charitable programs for vulnerable children, faces money laundering charges involving about UGX 500 million. Authorities allege that between 2023 and 2025, Fr. Ssekabira and accomplices concealed the ownership of funds transacted through Centenary Bank Masaka branch.
In court, Fr. Ssekabira recounted his ordeal of being arrested by armed men, held incommunicado in a dark room, and receiving food through a small opening under the door. He pleaded for bail to seek urgent medical attention.
His lawyers say they will petition the High Court for bail, while family and clergy outside the court continue advocating for his release.
The case follows Fr. Ssekabira’s abduction on December 3, 2025, by armed men in military uniform, sparking widespread concern and legal petitions by the Masaka Diocese. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces later confirmed he was in lawful custody to assist investigations into alleged violent subversive activities.
Watch the full report for details on the charges, detention, and next steps in the case of Fr. Ssekabira.
