This year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme is ‘End The Stereotypes’.
World Down Syndrome Day is marked globally on March 21st of each year. The purpose of the day is to support those who have Down syndrome and raise awareness of the illness. An additional chromosome is present in an individual with Down syndrome. All of the genes in the body are stored on long DNA strands called chromosomes. An infant has 46 chromosomes on average at birth (23 pairs). "Chromosome 21 is one of these chromosomes that babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state. The additional chromosome so affects the newborn's development—both physically and mentally—resulting in problems for the child's development.
